LDWF Game Breeder License Information
· A game breeder license is required of any individual who wishes to possess, acquire, purchase, transfers, sell, donate, etc. or otherwise dispose of domesticated game bird species. The game breeder license covers those species classified as game birds native to North America i.e. (waterfowl, bobwhite quail, ring-necked pheasants, etc.). Game Breeder Licenses are not issued for raptors, mammals, deer or other large, dangerous animals.
· A game breeder license will not be issued to possess any animal taken or obtained from the wild. A game breeder license will not be issued for injured/orphaned wildlife. Injured/Orphaned wildlife should be turned over to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. Only animals obtained from other licensed breeders will be allowed. The buyer must obtain a valid bill of sale containing the seller’s permit number, date of sale, and the number and species of birds sold at the time of purchase and maintained for the life of the animals.
· If you are interested in obtaining a game breeder license, you should first read the regulations and pen specifications included in the game breeder regulations. Pens/facilities/ponds shall meet or exceed the minimum specifications, which will prevent lost time and money on facilities that might not otherwise pass an inspection. Applicants for waterfowl possession: ‘Kiddie’ pools are not acceptable wading areas and will not be approved. Wading areas shall be at least 2 feet deep and shall not allow the animals feet to touch or drag the bottom of the wading area/pond/water facility and shall include sloped entrances/exits. All pen/enclosure substrates shall prevent foot injuries; crushed limestone is not suitable substrates for avian species.
· It must be emphasized that the minimum standards listed in the regulations and the optimum conditions for most animals would include dimensions several times greater than those cited. Game breeders should also recognize and provide for any unique requirements of the species they possess. In addition to the following pen specifications, all pens must have adequate sanitation as well as appropriate feeding and watering facilities. · You should apply for your Game Breeder’s License only after your pens have been constructed.
· Once your application is received, the Permits Office will contact you to schedule an inspection of your pen/facility and game animals. Licensed/permitted Game Breeders can only keep those classes of animals for which they have been approved. If an applicant desires to keep additional classes of animals, the facilities for those animals must be approved prior to obtaining the new animals.
· If approved, the licensed Game Breeder is required to submit an annual report detailing all transactions including sales, transfers, donations, purchases, etc. and the names, addresses, and license numbers for each individual.
· A Federal Migratory Bird Waterfowl Sale and Disposal Permit is required to sell, donate, or otherwise dispose of to another person, properly marked, captive-reared migratory waterfowl and their eggs.
